LOVE IN THE TIMES OF CORONA – Simon Webster Hair Pop-up Exhibition

LOVE IN THE TIMES OF CORONA – An exhibition by Miguel Amortegui

SWH Creatives is a series of pop-up exhibitions and events by local artists exhibiting original works for 24 hours only at the Simon Webster Hair salon on Gardner Street. Previous artists who have held one-man exhibitions as part of SWH Creatives include the urban-pop-artist, Cassette Lord, as well as contemporary portrait painter and Royal Academy exhibitor, Craig Simpson.

Now, Simon Webster Hair is celebrating their 12-year anniversary this April by relaunching SWH Creatives for 2024, with original works by acclaimed photojournalist and writer of Voices From The Jungle, Miguel Amortegui, aka MAAS.  MAAS began his career over 20years ago, documenting international conflicts, the movement of refugees, poverty and social crises.  His participatory photography empowers communities ravaged by trauma to reclaim their narratives. Though workshops with those living those experiences, he equips the subjects of his work with the power to wield a camera as a tool of expression to reveal tales of resilience, dignity and unwavering hope amidst adversity. His paintings emerged as a way to overcome the traumas that he witnessed while working as a photographer. And over time, it has become a prolific outlet as his work attempts to record and celebrate the people that he has encountered through his career.

Exhibiting at Simon Webster Hair for 24 hours only, MAAS will be showing a selection of his painting and prints, completed during and since 2020. The pop-up exhibition opens at Simon Webster Hair on Saturday 13th April at 6.30pm, with a private view reception until 9pm. It’s an opportunity to meet the artist, enjoy the original artworks and hear the incredible stories that inspired them. You’ll be able to purchase works by MAAS at exclusive prices, as well as bagging yourself a limited-edition goody bag from SWH and fellow North Laine businesses if you’re one of the first attending on the evening. And if you can’t make it along to the private view, the exhibition continues through Sunday.
