Brighton photographer Nigel Swallow launched his new book The Joy of Being Brighton on the 26th of October and the first copies will be available at a discounted price from his retail stall outside Snoopers Paradise on Kensington Gardens.
For 17 years Nigel produced the Brighton and Hove calendar which has been a staple feature of homes and offices all over Brighton and beyond– connecting those who share a mutual love of the city through quirky, joyous and familiar images that the city’s population related to as “somehow capturing the reason why I live here”. Nigel also produced ‘The Brighton Book’ under the name North Laine Photography in 2011 and sold all 6000 copies.
The new gift-sized book contains the best images from previous publications along with some previously hidden archive gems. Nigel says it is full of “uncontrived candid street photography” and photos which “capture human interaction culminating in joyful moments in the city”.
Insider Tommy Roberts says that it is “a cacophony of candidly captured joyous Brighton and Hove moments.”
Images include people diving off the Palace Pier in the summer, getting drenched on the undercliff path, Burning of the Clocks lanterns lit by scarlet firelight and a lady transporting a Christmas tree home on a skateboard.
Nigel’s favourite piece is probably (he says) the simplest – three shots of a dad playing with his very young child at the sea edge with no artistic pretension. He says they are “shots we all take these days of family except these are of an anonymous candid moment of time and not anyone the photographer knows. They are just simple joy”.
The Joy of Being Brighton is a hardback, cloth bound publication with 192 pages. The first 1000 copies are available to buy from 26th October outside Snoopers Paradise for £15. (Thereafter £24 each or 2 for £40).
