Wrap up warm and head out to the Brilliant Brighton streets from 5pm on Thursday 17th February to enjoy free film trails, live music and more throughout the city centre.
The Third Thursdays’ event will see musicians performing, films by international artists showing in businesses’ windows, Pop Up Brighton’s Bring Your Own Beamer and a film trail, taking place in The Lanes, North Laine, North Street, Western Road and Preston Street from 5-8pm – all inspired by the theme of colour, perfect to brighten up February!
Third Thursdays are a monthly opportunity to see, experience and take part in art, music and culture, making Brighton city centre the place to be, with events, performances, film projections and new artwork commissions during the dark evenings.
This is the third Third Thursday event under this pilot partnership project between Brilliant Brighton (the city centre’s Business Improvement District, formed of 517 retail, leisure and hospitality businesses) and the ABCD Cultural Recovery Plan (a collaborative plan created by over 100 creatives in the city, which has secured £350,000 of funding for the cultural sector in the city from partners including Brighton & Hove City Council, Arts Council England and the Pebble Trust). The partnership project’s aim is to bring together residents, visitors and businesses with the city’s thriving cultural sector, and to add culture on the city centre’s streets during the winter period for residents and visitors to enjoy.
“After such a fantastic response from our December and January events, we’re really looking forward to this month’s Third Thursday! Films will be shown in Brilliant Brighton business’ windows (including Infinity Foods, Ollie Quinn, Habitat and Knoops), a Bring Your Own Beamer outdoor projector event in Brighton Place, and a colourful film trail, starting at Deichmann on Western Road at 6pm – which sees exciting and thought-provoking work projected onto buildings, as well as live music, throughout Brilliant Brighton. We hope whether you’re out with the kids, or just looking for something fun to do, that you’ll come and enjoy all Third Thursdays have to offer,” Shelley Welti, Marketing & Events Manager for Brilliant Brighton says.
“For February’s Third Thursday, in celebration of it being LGBTQ+ History Month, we’re bringing all the colours of the rainbow to the streets through projection of film and artworks,” Third Thursdays curator and co-founder of videoclub, Jamie Wyld explains.
“Artists David Parker and Jessica Miller have been selected through our open submission programme to show their work. Parker’s Chroma City is a video installation using a giant kaleidoscope, merging the colours of local streets into a video artwork. Miller’s ULTRA combines film, dance and music to create a vibrantl film performance. There’ll be a newly curated film trail to follow, bringing colourful international films from across the world to the streets of Brighton. In addition, there’ll be diverse music from Brighton and Hove artists in the streets of the city all to listen to. And all this for free.”
Join the Third Thursdays fun from 5pm on Thursday 17th February, with the trail starting at Deichmann at 6pm, and Bring Your Own Beamer (which welcomes you to take part, or to enjoy watching) from 7pm.
Enjoy even more art throughout Brilliant Brighton by spotting work created by local artists encompassing walls, bus stops, lampposts and street furniture, as part of The Enliven Brighton Art Trail – also part of the partnership project between Brilliant Brighton and the ABCD Cultural Recovery Plan.
Murals from Dave Pop and Eelus bring joy to a small number of businesses’ walls, while Josef Cabey and Gil Mualem-Doron’s bright graphics add colour to bus stops, Kate Forrester’s delicate detailed sea-inspired illustrations brightens up planters, Liberty Cheverall’s work spreads positivity on litter bins, and artists from inclusive, not-for-profit organisation Rocket Artists Studio add vibrance, with artwork wrapped around lampposts in Preston Street and North Laine.
