A bit about the Brilliant Brighton lights
Our magical Christmas lights are a gift paid for by the 517 Brilliant Brighton businesses that make up a large part of our city centre. The street art-inspired lights will light up North Street and Western Road, while lights celebrating the uniqueness of North Laine will sparkle in Bond Street, Gardner Street and Kensington Gardens; and more traditional lighting will add a magical, festive feeling to The Lanes, East Street, Preston Street and Brighton’s iconic Clock Tower.
Artist Spotlight: Oskar with a K
Oskar’s work is infused with meaning that manifests itself in a blend of symbols, illustrations and typography. Themes for his work include social activism projects, mural workshops and large scale typographic interventions. His mediums include: stencils, spray paint, brushes and rollers.
About the opportunity to design one of Brilliant Brighton’s new lights, Oskar said:‘I wanted to come up with something a bit tongue and cheek on the theme of the Christmas period, and thought that Brighton folk would appreciate the sentiment of ‘here we go again’. We’ve all muttered these words when passing advent calendars on the shelf in mid October. It’s great that local artists are being brought in to work on the lights. There’s something really nice about drawing on local talent as opposed to flying in some famous people from elsewhere! Having my work up as Christmas lights in the city centre, it’s bonkers. I can honestly say that it’s one of the weirdest and coolest projects I’ve been part of’.
