A celebration of The Sea at KMA Gallery

4-30 September 2024

KMA Gallery’s September exhibition is traversing the shores of the sea with a collection of artworks that seek to represent its many facets, from shimmering low tides to glowing amber skylines. Featuring new collections from painters Sam Peacock and Jonathan Smith, and ceramicist Paul Wearing.

Known for his signature fired steel panels of landscapes near coastal areas of the south east, Sam Peacock sought to challenge the norm of how we interpret landscape and coastal paintings in the terms of colour and feeling. Deep reds and luscious pinks meet sapphire blues and emerald greens, with paint scraped and manipulated across the panel as if eroded like the land.

Jonathan Smith’s new collection of paintings continues a lifelong exploration of the seas of the Hebrides. A landscape hewn by the hardy North Atlantic weather and peppered with diverse seasons, he seeks to distil a sense of movement through space and time using colour and brush stroke. The final collection is awash with the blue tones of the sea, crashing into rocky outcrops or rippling across the sand.

Paul Wearing’s meditative vessels, created using a time-intensive manual coiling technique, achieve a new level of zen in response to the theme, not unlike the calming impact the sea has on our psyche. His signature rough-hewn finish takes on new resonance against the theme of the sea, recalling barnacled rocks and foam-topped waves. New shapes introduced reference buoys, or take on the monolithic presence of a lighthouse atop a cliff.

Also on show are vibrant and bold landscape paintings by Moira Hazel, textured abstract paintings inspired by towns and crime novels by Ashley Hanson, contemplative figurative sculptures by Su Jameson, and striking glass vessels from Gregg Anson-Race.

These artworks are on view curated across two floors at Kellie Miller Arts Gallery.
