English’s of Brighton Celebrates 80 Years with the Leigh-Jones Family and 150 Years of Seafood Heritage

This autumn, Brighton’s oldest independent seafood restaurant, English’s of Brighton, celebrates a remarkable double milestone. 80 years of ownership by the Leigh-Jones family, and over 150 years since the restaurant first opened its doors in the historic Lanes.

A cornerstone of Brighton’s dining scene for generations, English’s is renowned for its freshly shucked oysters, elegant interiors, classic oyster bar and enduring reputation as the city’s original oyster house.

A Coastal Legacy, Celebrated

To honour this historic moment, English’s is launching a season of celebration under the theme “80 Iconic Years”. In a tribute to the restaurant’s timeless charm, its loyal patrons and its unique role in Brighton’s culinary story.

Highlights include
  • Throwback Menu – A limited-time, four-course menu (£70) curated by Head Chef Yuri Magni, reimagining iconic English’s dishes from across the decades. Available Mon 29 Sep to Sun 5 Oct. Offering diners the chance to savour the flavours that have defined English’s across generations.
  • Anniversary Event – Thurs 9 Oct, English’s will host an exclusive evening for loyal guests, local press and friends of the restaurant. Featuring oysters, canapés, Champagne, live music and a journey through the restaurants history.
  • Special Voucher Offer – As a Birthday treat, guests can purchase gift vouchers for just 80% of their value, the perfect way to share the English’s experience or indulge yourself.
Sharing the stories

Central to the celebrations are the memories of English’s diners. From first dates and family gatherings to celebrity sightings and wedding receptions. These stories, collected via social media, email and postcards at the restaurant, will be woven into festivities showcased throughout autumn.

“We’re incredibly proud to reach this milestone,” says Simon Leigh-Jones, second-generation owner. “For 80 years, we’ve welcomed generations of guests through our doors. Celebrating not only our family’s history here, but also English’s wider 150-year story is a true joy, and we want our customers to feel part of it.”

Guests are invited to join celebrations this October and beyond, by sampling the special anniversary menu, sharing stories that shaped English’s, and enjoying the warm hospitality that has defined the restaurant since 1945.
