Vintage Valentine’s cards return to Snoopers Paradise in Brighton

A collection of vintage Victorian and Edwardian Valentine’s cards is back on sale at Snoopers Paradise in Brighton ahead of Valentine’s Day.

The cards, held by Stall 52, date from the late 19th and early 20th centuries and include illustrated postcards, novelty cards and pop-up designs. Many differ from modern Valentine’s cards, with messages that comment on behaviour, marriage or future prospects rather than simple declarations of love.

Some feature printed verses that warn against bad habits or hint at change, while others show courtship and marriage in a formal, practical way.

Jenny Hurren from Snoopers Paradise said:

“People are often surprised by what these cards actually say. They’re not all romantic – some are quite direct. Most are blank and in very good condition, which means they can still be used as intended.”

The collection has recently been shared in a short video on Snoopers Paradise’s social media.

Prices start from £3, with more elaborate novelty and pop-up cards priced higher. The cards are displayed on a large table in the back corner of the shop.
