One of Brighton’s longest-established independent opticians is celebrating 35 years of looking after local patients, having witnessed significant changes in eye care, technology and the High Street since first opening its doors in the city.
Since 1991, Eyesite in North Street has provided eye care to generations of Brighton families, building a reputation through personal service, clinical expertise and long-term relationships with patients. Over three and a half decades, the practice has seen the profession transformed by advances in diagnostic technology, changing consumer habits and growing awareness of the importance of eye health.
Despite those changes, Managing Director Jim Green believes the principles that have underpinned the practice’s success have remained consistent.
“Thirty-five years is a significant milestone, particularly at a time when the high street has faced enormous challenges and many independent businesses have disappeared,” he said.
“We’ve seen huge changes in the optical profession. When the practice first opened, eye examinations and dispensing were very different to what patients experience today. Technology has transformed our ability to detect and monitor eye conditions, often identifying problems years earlier than would previously have been possible.
“But while the technology has evolved, the most important part of the job hasn’t changed at all. People still want to be listened to, they want continuity of care, and they want to know that the advice they’re receiving is genuinely in their best interests.”
The practice has cared for many families over several generations, with some patients having attended for decades.
“One of the greatest privileges of working in an independent practice is building relationships that last,” added Jim. “We now regularly see the children and even grandchildren of patients who first came through our doors many years ago. That level of trust is something we’re incredibly proud of.”
As the optical market has become increasingly competitive, Eyesite has continued to invest in new clinical services and technology while maintaining its independent approach.

Jim believes that independence has been central to the practice’s longevity.
“Being independent means, we have the freedom to focus entirely on what’s right for each individual patient. We’re not tied to a particular product range or corporate model, and that allows us to provide genuinely personalised recommendations and care.
“I think patients value that. They know they’ll see familiar faces, they’ll receive consistent advice, and they’ll be treated as individuals rather than transactions.”
The practice’s longevity has also been supported by the commitment of its team, many of whom have spent much of their careers with the business.
“Businesses don’t reach 35 years without great people,” said Jim. “Our team’s dedication, professionalism and genuine care for patients have played a huge role in our success. Many colleagues have been with us for years, which helps create the welcoming and familiar environment that patients tell us they appreciate.”
Reflecting on the milestone, Jim said the anniversary is as much about thanking the local community as celebrating the business itself.
“Ultimately, we’ve only reached this point because of the loyalty and support of the people of Brighton. The city has changed enormously since 1991, but we’ve been fortunate to remain part of that journey.
“We’re proud of what we’ve achieved over the past 35 years, but we’re equally focused on the future. Our aim is simply to continue providing the highest standards of care and service for the generations of patients who place their trust in us.”
To celebrate their 35th anniversary, Eyesite have a week of celebrations taking place between 16th-20th June.
